I made it to the local multiplex over the weekend to see this movie, which I see has had a long, troubled history. It was first-time-directed by a producer/writer/actor named Dean Devlin (“Real Genius”), who has been the long-time collaborator of major blockbuster helmer, Roland Emmerich. Apparently, this movie had such poor test screenings, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Danny Cannon (“Judge Dredd”, TV’s “Gotham”) were brought in do re-do, but Devlin’s name ended up on the final product. Also, the movie’s release date was pushed back multiple times, and now since it’s release a few weeks ago, it’s been a disappointment with its box office receipts and has been panned by the critics. The film garnered a whopping 14% at Rotten Tomatoes and 5.7/10 at IMDb

Okay, so why again did I go see this??? Well, in spite of all that, and a major silly plotline, this movie is actually a lot of fun. The unbelievable plot goes something like this: After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong: the system built to protect Earth is attacking it, and it becomes a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything and everyone along with it.

Gerard Butler stars as the scientist who created and battles the satellite system. Hell, just listening to  Butler and Jim Sturgess doing their phony American accents was worth the price of admission alone! Although, certainly waiting for the DVD or video-on-demand would be a safe bet…

Veterans Ed Harris and Andy Garcia (as the President) co-star.
